Charlize Theron stars as the leader of a group of immortal soldiers who defend all of mortal mankind from those who oppose them in the Netflix superhero feature, The Old Guard. And yes, the more I reflect on this after having finished watching it, the more it does resemble another similar superhero flick from earlier this year, Bloodshot. Both films follow people who can literally cheat death through their immortality and superpowers. And yet in spite of a big difference in overall critical reception (with "Bloodshot" receiving negative reviews and "The Old Guard" receiving positive reviews) both films feel the same to me. Sure, there are a few more differences between these films such as this film's broader focus on the units within the team, as opposed to "Bloodshot" being mostly centered on Vin Diesel and hardly focusing on his team at all. But for the most part, it just felt like I was going through the motions watching another typical action flick that Hollywood is used to cranking out in their sleep nowadays.
And without much in the way of spontaneity or innovative plot developments that would spark some interest on my end, that sentiment is all the more validated. Much like "Bloodshot" the problem with "The Old Guard" is that there isn't enough on offer here with the content it offers in comparison with the countless peers that came before it. And if I said it once already, I'll say it again. Superhero films are a tired and overexposed genre as of the past decade. And that fatigue makes sense when there's literally a new superhero movie coming out every month, regardless of how famous or obscure the superhero in question is. In the case of "The Old Guard" the only cast member that I might be able to remember a month from now is the one played by Charlize Theron. And even then, I'm not holding my breath on that. The new recruit that this immortal group adds within this narrative, played by KiKi Layne, is quite underwhelming in my opinion.
The narrative "flirts" with the idea of one immortal member within this group losing their immortality, which on paper could have some dramatic promise. In practice, however, not only does this plot thread make little to no sense in hindsight (due to a baffling lack of any explanation for this development) but the film never goes anywhere with it. They don't follow through on a potentially dramatic conflict and give any tension the narrative was building up its proper pay-off. Sure, the cast, including Theron, does its best with the material as it is. But when said material has such an overwhelming sense of de ja vu inherited in every step, it's hard to work up any interest and excitement over what's being presented to me, especially because I'm so sick and tired of this oversaturated film genre. A few fleeting moments might grab my attention, but as it stands, I think it's painfully clear that "The Old Guard" and many other endless competing peers of its ilk are truly getting stale and old. It's as if they're losing their immortality.

My favorite gay couple in any movie. Heck, I'm not sure I could even call them a gay couple. What Joe and Nicky had transcends our own 'mortal' concept of love. Basically, I'm a child and an infant, and I'd just come across as infantile if I tried to label their relationship. Dark angel 0:34. What an awesome scene. I wish we could get a series too when they go through their background stories

If you have read the Graphic Novel before watching this, you are likely going to be disappointed because the novel is so much better.
It is grander, Andy is more bad as* more flashbacks about their old life, and the action scenes are much more spectacular.
If you haven't read the novel and just watched this, I think you will still find it entertaining enough though. And I would highly recommend that you get the Graphic Novel afterwards. Kinda reminded me of Dishonered with the sword and gun thing.
